Frau Holle" is a German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm in Children's and Household Tales in 1812.
The story is about a widow who had two daughters, one was beautiful and very hardworking; the other one was ugly and very lazy. The widow favored the ugly daughter, allowing her to become spoiled and idle while her beautiful daughter was left to do all the work. Every day the stepdaughter would sit outside the cottage and spin beside the well. After losing the spin one day, she met Frau Holle and worked for her for a longer period. Due to her hard work, the beautiful girl was rewarded with gold. The widow sent her ugly daughter to Frau Holle to come back with gold as well, but she came back with pitch, as she was lazy and did not help Frau Holle.
