Dear ISF Community

The beautiful fall colors have dawned our campus and crisp fall weather is giving way to cool morning starts. Please send students dressed in multiple layers to be prepared for the weather temperature changes throughout the day.

November is an exciting month with many opportunities for on campus events! Diwalli Spirit Day will kick-off the month of events, followed by school photos, SPTC, GISST U14 Football Competition, and much more. All events can be found on the school online calendar.

We have the MS and HS Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences (SPTC) November 1-11 and PS SPTCs November 14-18. All families should have the opportunity to meet with their children’s teachers. If you were unable to find a time available to meet with one of the teachers, please email the Academic Coordinator to find an alternative meeting solution.

On Monday, November 7, at 8.30 join me for a hands-on workshop where you will get to know all about the school's EduTech offerings and how to access them; SDP, eBooks, PALS, Teams, etc. All participants will need to bring a device with both parent and student SDP logins. “It was a wonderful experience for us to work on the ‘Closet Treasures’ project with all our friends. We were able to gather approximately 1,385 euros through this project all of which went towards Projekt Schmetterling to help the women’s cancer charity cause. This cause is sponsored by AIWC Charity with whom we also worked last year. It was a golden opportunity that helped us grow and learn overall.

Our friends were really supportive throughout our project and deserve credit for this event turning out in place and well together. It was overall a team of 5-6 people including Carly Seibel, Paris Schuster, Havin Demir, Jeyoo Chang who put in 5-6 hours throughout the project and without whom it wouldn’t have been possible.

We would also like to thank our friends who modeled and also helped in organizing the clothes during the sales or helped at the snacks counter. We worked really hard at organizing the SLO^® room daily with all the clothes, shoes, and accessories that were donated. We had to keep arranging a good number of bags continuously and making sure the place stayed tidy throughout even when the customers shopped, which was a challenge. We also had a fashion runway event before opening the sales, which was quite fun to work on especially while deciding outfits for all the models.

We were able to raise a good amount of money and we are glad and satisfied that our hard work benefited a good cause. Last but not least, we would like to thank AIWC, Miss Hannon, and Miss Shi for their tremendous support throughout our project”

On Saturday, October 15, over 70 high school students and a few staff members dressed up for their evening at the Homecoming event. In the month leading up to the special occasion, students spent their time planning this experience. They transformed the sports cafeteria and surrounding area into a Cloud 9 atmosphere. In total over 500 balloons were used to decorate for homecoming, including a photo booth, a balloon arch, cotton clouds, and balloon clouds. The feeling of walking through clouds was created by cotton covering your feet and balloons floating above your head. Our menu included mocktails and soft drinks, which were served with homemade cookies, fruit cups, and Rice Krispy treats. Our talented student DJs played a variety of music, which added to the festive mood.

Thank you to Parent Network for the beautiful balloon arch, the staff for logistics and supervision, and the student team for organizing this event!

To wrap up October, the SLO^® Activities department partnered with the Parent Network for three Halloween-related contests. The first contest was a Spooktakular Hallway contest based on door decorations, the second was a pumpkin decorating contest where students brought their pumpkins to school and put them on display in the main courtyard, and the final one was a costume contest which included many categories for students and staff to participate in. All winners were announced on Monday, October 31, in school.

HALLOWEEN MOVIE NIGHT

Halloween Movie Night for grades 3 to 8 took place after school on Friday, October 14. Over 120 students gathered in the theater along with a team of 14 prefects who helped in the organization and execution of the event. The event started with a series of fun Halloween-related trivia questions and then the lights were turned off to watch a few short Halloween films that all the students enjoyed. The SLO^® Lower School department also provided the students with popcorn and some spooky Halloween candies to munch on. I would like to give a special thanks to Ms. Rader, Ms. Hannon, my team, and all the students who participated for supporting the event and making it a huge success!

A slight wind and plenty of sunshine made for perfect weather for an intense football game on Wednesday, October 19. Everyone gathered to watch the staff battle against the students. After a few photos were taken to capture the moment, the game began.

Students started off strong taking a 1-0 lead, but this soon changed. The staff quickly overtook the students and did not allow them to score whatsoever. The first half ended with the staff leading 6-2! The staff kept the pressure on and continued dominating the rest of the game. The second half was more intense as the students desperately pushed against the staff. However, their efforts were of no avail as the staff won 13-4. The staff team was aided by former students who have now joined as coaches in the Sports Academy and was supported by grade 6 and 10 students.

The game was filled with some great action plays and the best goal of the match was scored by the students: Yuki saw the goalkeeper wandering outside his penalty box. From the halfway line, he chipped the ball over the goalkeeper for an extraordinary effort.

It was amazing to watch the rivalry between the two sides. It was a competitive endeavor but fair in nature. Overall, players left the field exhausted but smiling and satisfied along with the spectators.

Dear Parents,

The teachers are looking forward to meeting you.

I hope you and our Middle School students enjoyed the break. The rest and time outside in the fresh air and sunshine should hopefully carry us healthy and happy through the rest of the term.

We are now looking forward to our Student Led Parent Teacher Conferences which will take place between the 1^st and the 10^th of November. The first week will be dedicated to virtual conferences while the second week for in-person meetings at ISF. Middle School students this year are taking control of their own learning. In the Advising classes, they have set goals for the term. The students are tracking their Math and English AMS scores. They will also be taking charge of the Parent Teacher Conferences by explaining their scores to you and with your help and that of their teacher find ways and means to help them improve their learning. We are looking forward to meeting you.

The 1^st break of the school year is here. This means you have more time to spend going out and enjoying nature to recharge and be ready to successfully end term 1.

School starts every day with our homeroom time. Short, but such an important time of our school day! Relevant information for the day/week is given there, and it is time to get ready for all the learning that each day brings. Check out the grades 9 & 10 homerooms and guess which one yours is! (9B came easy this time!)

ASMA

(American Scholastic Mathematics Association) Contests are back!

We are happy to announce that ASMA 2022-2023 contests, an annual worldwide school (Junior and Senior Leagues) are back. 6 35-minute contests of mathematics fun are coming to our grades 7 to 12 students. Get your calculator and enjoy!

Previous contests questions & answers will be available for all students who wish to participate. Prep is not mandatory but recommended. All those who join will receive SLO^® points and a certificate of participation. The highest-scoring students in school will receive a special ISF award, while the students scoring highest in each league will receive an award from the organization. You will have a chance to sign up for Contest 1 during week 9. See the dates and times below!

Here is the first volume of the monthly Science Spectrum magazine that our Student Science Organization has written. This is one of the activities that we are actually working on.

The SSO encounter three IB1 students that have decided to work on different scientific theme each month and to express their passion for science in general and for chemistry in particular through games, activities and writings. Head of Chemistry Department, Dr. Mrad-Hage is their advisor and the editor for their scientific writings. To make sure that all the published information is accurate and up to high standards of knowledge.

This is accounted for them as a CAS project where each student can fill a duty and contribute to expressing his knowledge in a different way. Please find their names attached in the file. Not all of them are chemistry students but they all share the same passion for science. You will also find a study about Bioplastics, scientific crossword and scientific riddles.

Music in Primary Ages

Grades 2-4 did a composition project in October. They worked on writing their own music with three notes and three rhythms across 4 measures. There were some amazing results and students were able to play some of their classmates’ work. We plan to do another composition activity shortly after the New Year. We will begin to prepare music for the Winter Concert while continuing to build our understanding of what we play and sing. The Primary Concert will be on December 9 and we hope parents are able to join us for singing, boomwhackers, and ukuleles.

Music in the Middle School

All classes are now preparing for the Winter Concert. We are excited once again to highlight more student work. The Winter Concert will be on Thursday, December 15, at 2:30 p.m. The Music Production and Performance classes will have their music highlighted on the announcements at the start of school around the concert date. A few compositions will be highlighted during the concert between the Strings and Choral ensembles. Information was shared on the SDP about student concert attire that day. It is a special day for the students and we hope they are all able to dress in this special way to commemorate their work in these special settings. Most importantly, we hope the parents and students are able to share end enjoy the various expressions of music.
